Whether you’ve never had an adjustment before and you want to know what it involves, or you see your Chiropractor regularly and would like an insight into what actually happens, carry on reading below….
As satisfying as that ‘cracking’ sound is – there is so much more to it!
Let’s explore…
An adjustment is a high-velocity, low-amplitude thrust at a specific joint to achieve optimal functioning of the joint, and enter the ‘paraphysiological space’ This means that the joint is taken past where it is ‘stuck’, and into where it can move and function optimally.
So what is the popping sound?
Most of the joints in the skeletal system contain synovial fluid. When a controlled, quick movement can create a negative pressure, like a vacuum, which causes gas to be drawn out of the joint.
This creates a cavity, or a space. This is why the click is often termed a ‘cavitation’.
To demonstrate this, try squeezing the palms of your hands together and squeeze all the air out. When you quickly separate your hands, you’ll be able to reproduce a pop.
This is a by product of the adjustment that commonly, but not always, happens.
Broken down, the meaning Chiro-practic is ‘done by hand. we may occasionally use other tools, but these specific ‘adjustments’ are predominantly detected and managed using our hands.
To perform a skilful movement with precision and competence takes thousands of repetitions of practice.
Throw into the mix the uniqueness of the human body to each individual.
This is why it is so important to have the right qualifications to administer ‘the adjustment’.
The art and skill of the Chiropractic is learned over a 5 year Masters degree (which additionally also involves in depth education in human function, anatomy and diagnosis etc).
After an adjustment, the recipient often feels immediate relief and better flexibility. Comments we might hear include “I feel lighter and easier”, “I feel more energised”, “I feel better balanced”. Occasionally there may be some mild discomfort a few days after- this is a healing response due to inflammation.
However, the true magic is in the effect on the nervous system.

“When I first came to the clinic my neck was very painful and I constantly needed to move around as it hurt when I sat still for long periods of time. My treatments and massages have been fantastic and I am hardly ever in pain anymore. All of the SCC staff are so friendly and accommodating. I always feel very welcome whenever I visit.” Charlotte Cripps
